Assessments and Evaluations

Diagnostic Evaluations

Continuum partners with your medical doctor to assist with diagnostic evaluations.  We are able to perform portions of comprehensive evaluations to streamline the process and allow your doctor to review and confirm the findings. This is available in our DC, MD, and VA offices.

Skills Assessments

During our evaluation process, we determine the most appropriate assessments to help identify areas of growth.  We utilize a variety of skills assessments that target developmental, academic, and social skills.  The results of the assessments are then analyzed and used to develop treatment goals.

Behavioral Assessments

We conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) to identify challenging behaviors and hypothesize their function.  We use that information to develop a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that outlines interventions to help reduce maladaptive behaviors.

The ADOS is a standardized diagnostic assessment that focuses on social and communication deficits to aid in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.  Our evaluator uses planned social situations to elicit responses and interactions that are then analyzed.  We provide you a detailed report which you can take to your medical doctor who can interpret the results and determine and medical diagnosis. Continuum can collaborate with your medical doctor to streamline the diagnostic process. This is available in our Virginia, Maryland, and DC offices only.

The SRS-2 is a standardized caregiver questionnaire that is used to help diagnose autism and identify social impairments in four subscales: social awareness, social cognition, social communication, social motivation, and restricted interests and repetitive behavior. Many insurances require the SRS be performed on an annual basis to confirm the diagnosis of autism.  Continuum can conduct this assessment as part of our comprehensive ABA services or as a stand-alone assessment and send the results to your doctor and/or insurance company.

Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales Third Edition is an instrument used to assist in the diagnosis of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Vineland-3 also provides valuable information about skill deficits and can aide in developing treatment goals. Continuum can conduct the Vineland assessment as part of comprehensive ABA services or as a stand-alone assessment that you can take back to your medical doctor.

The PDDBI is a norm-referenced instrument that measures a client's response to intervention.  The PDDBI is administered every six months to monitor and evaluate treatment process. Continuum offers both the Teacher and Parent forms which assess challenging behaviors as well as social, language, and learning/memory skills.  This assessment is a requirement for all TRICARE families, and Continuum works closely with TRICARE to provide all assessment results.

The PSI is a respondent rating scale for parents who have children younger than 12 years of age.  The PSI has three domains: child characteristics, parent characteristics, and situational/demographic life stress.  This assessment helps to identify stress levels that a family could be experiencing so that we can provide training, support, and resources  to the whole family. Additionally, this assessment is required for all TRICARE families and Continuum works with TRICARE to provide all assessment results.

The SIPA is the age extension of the PSI and is geared for parents who have children ages 13 years and older.  This assessment tool has a respondent rating scale that screens for stress in parents and caregivers.  This assessment helps to identify stress levels that a family could be experiencing so that we can provide training and support to the whole family.  Additionally, this assessment is required for all TRICARE families and Continuum works with TRICARE to provide all assessment results.

We conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) to identify challenging behaviors and hypothesize their function. This is done through structured interviews, behavioral questionnaires like the FAST or QABF, and direct observations.  The data is then gathered and analyzed which is used to create a Behavior Intervention Plan.  All clients receiving comprehensive ABA services will go through the FBA process during intake.  However, we also provide this as a stand-alone service which is very beneficial to individuals who are not diagnosed with autism and are only wanting help with challenging behaviors.

Continuum's Assessment Process

We understand the diagnostic evaluation process can be extensive and time consuming.  Additionally, many insurances have requirements that certain assessments must be conducted in order to access ABA therapy.  We work with your family, medical doctor, and insurance company to streamline the process and provide the necessary assessments in a timely manner.  For families receiving comprehensive ABA services, Continuum conducts an FBA which is used to create your learner’s behavior plan as well as conducts appropriate skills assessments which guide treatment goals.  We collaborate with you and your medical team to determine the most effective treatment plan for your learner.
